On April 28, 2019, a group of activists staged a rolling demonstration dubbed the “Truth & Poverty ‘Spill the Tea’ Tour” of Boston. The event was meant to draw attention to poverty-stricken areas and related issues such as gentrification, homelessness, drug addiction, education and race.
According to the Associated Press the tours were planned as part a revival of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Poor People’s Campaign, and were launched in December 2017 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of King’s original campaign. By spring of 2019, similar events had been held in more than 30 states.
